Material and Process

Ordinary hooks: mostly made of thin steel plate plating, some are made of plastic or wire. The thin structure is very easy to bend and deform when subjected to force, and it will rust quickly when it is in a humid environment for a long time.

Heavy-duty garage hooks: the core material is made of thickened steel plate, wrought iron or stainless steel, through the one-piece molding process, the thickness of the steel plate can be up to 3-5 times that of the ordinary hooks; the surface is sprayed with plastic, which greatly improves the resistance to bending and corrosion.

Design and structure

Only recommended for hanging ultra-lightweight items that do not have a higher value and must not weigh more than 9 kg:

Bicycle helmets, small gardening gloves;

Thin plug boards and charging cables (need to be neatly twisted to control the total weight).

Items that must use heavy-duty hooks

Bicycles: Choose vertical or horizontal heavy-duty bicycle hooks rated to hold at least 50 pounds to ensure the frame is held securely;

Ladders: Choose wide-mouth J-hooks with openings that match the ladder’s crossbar and are rated to hold at least 60 pounds;

Power tools and cables: Choose heavy-duty hose reels or power tool racks rated to hold at least 30 pounds;

Step 1: Accurately weigh the storage equipment

First determine the actual weight of the items to be hung, the following is the average weight of common garage items and the recommended hook bearing weight, you can directly refer to:

Step 2: Confirm the type of garage wall

The type of wall is the core factor in selecting hooks, and the installation requirements are very different for different walls:

Wooden keel wall: the most suitable for heavy-duty hooks, use 1/4 inch and above specification expansion anchor bolts, and the anchor bolts are buried in the keel at a depth of ≥5 cm;

Cement/brick wall: use special cement anchor bolt hooks, and need to use an impact drill with a builders’ drill to drill holes, and form a solid bond with the wall after the anchor bolts have been expanded;

Pure gypsum board wall (without a keel): Avoid hanging any heavy items, if necessary, use heavy duty hooks with hollow wall anchors, and the load should not exceed 30 pounds.

Step 3: Match the hooks design to the shape of the item

Choose hooks based on the shape of the item to improve stability and prevent slippage:

Round/tubular items (bike racks, water pipes, etc.): choose curved hooks with rubber coating to prevent slippage;

Flat/long items (ladders, boards, etc.): choose wide-mouth J-hooks with an opening width that matches the thickness of the item;

Shaped items (lawnmowers, toolboxes, etc.): choose heavy-duty, adjustable cantilever arms or use them with a multifunction bracket; High-value items (motorized bicycles, tool boxes, etc.): choose adjustable heavy-duty cantilever arms; and high-value items (e-bikes, kayaks, etc.): prioritize heavy-duty hooks with locking structures to prevent accidental dislodgement.

Step 4: Prioritize corrosion resistance

Wet and dusty garage, some areas will be exposed to oil, corrosion resistance directly determines the service life of the hooks:

dry garage: sprayed steel hooks cost-effective, fully able to meet the needs;

wet garage (such as underground garage): stainless steel or hot dip galvanized hooks must be used to prevent rust;

contact with chemicals (such as near the oil storage area): give priority to the choice of metal hooks, corrosion resistance is better.

Accurately locate the wooden keel

Always use an electronic keel detector, don’t guess by experience;

Mark the keel with a pencil after you find it (the width of the keel is usually 10-15cm), make sure the bolt is hit in the center of the keel accurately;

If the detector fails to work, tap on the wall surface: the keel is the place with the dull sound, and the gypsum board is the place with the hollow sound.

Tips for drilling holes in cement walls

Impact drills must be used, matched with the specifications of the anchor bolt with the construction drill bit (the diameter of the drill bit should be the same as the expansion bolt);

The depth of the drill hole should be 5-10 mm deeper than the length of the anchor bolt, to avoid the anchor bolt can not be fully expanded due to the shallow drilling;

Clean up the debris in the hole in a timely manner after the drilling, to ensure that the anchor bolt can be fully expanded after the installation, and the wall surface is tightly adhered to.

Choose the right hardware accessories, refuse to cut corners

Don’t use the cheap screws that come with the hooks, but match with high strength expansion bolts of 1/4 inch and above;

Make sure to add heavy-duty flat shims during installation to disperse the pressure between the hooks and the wall surface, so as to avoid cracking of the wall surface caused by localized stress;

If a single item needs to be hung with multiple hooks (e.g. a long ladder), make sure that the spacing of the hooks is even to achieve a balanced load.

Regular Inspection and Maintenance

Every 6 months, do a comprehensive inspection of all heavy-duty hooks: check whether the bolts are loose, whether the hooks are bent and deformed, and whether the rubber coating is peeling off;

In humid environments, check for rust every 3 months, and use rust remover to treat the rusty spots in time, and replace the hooks that are seriously rusted;

If the weight of the items changes (e.g., new items are added to the storage box), the load-bearing capacity of the hooks needs to be re-evaluated, and replace them with products of higher rated load capacity, if necessary. If necessary, replace the hooks with higher rated products.
